News 31 December 2009: Village Post Office To Reopen

The Coldingham Post Office was forced to close in December when the lease was terminated. However after extensive discussion with the Post Office authorities and with Scottish Borders Council a plan has been developed to secure the long term future of the Post Office.

The first stage of the plan is to reopen the Post Office in a temporary building situated in the car park to the side of the Village Hall. If all goes well this reopening should take place in the week commencing the 8th February 2010.

The longer term future of the Post Office depends on an exciting plan to replace the public toilets in the Car Park with a new building which will incorporate an interpretation centre for the Priory and a community Post Office as well as a modern public toilet.  Provisional plans have been drawn up for this building to demonstrate the feasibility of the project and these have already been endorsed in principle by the Post Office and Scottish Borders Council.

For the redevelopment project to succeed it will be necessary to raise funding from various grant giving bodies and for the building to be community owned. The Community Company set up in the unsuccessful bid to buy Coldingham Sands Youth Hostel provides the ideal organisation for this.  Proposals for the Community Company to adopt this role will be put to the members of the Company at its next Annual General meeting which is due to be held towards the end  of January.
